Day Two Recap of DICK'S Sporting Goods Pony League World Series

GAME 2: Johnstown, PA 10, Manchester, NH 3

Host Area Champion Johnstown, PA opened Game Two of the DICK's Sporting Goods PONY League World Series with three runs in the top of the first and never looked back, defeating East Zone Champion, Manchester, NH, 10-3.

Johnstown opened the scoring just three batters in, thanks to back-to-back one out doubles by Aaron Smearman and Ben Kormanski.

The third Johnstown double of the inning, struck by Lucas Oleksa, drove in two runs to grow the lead to 3-0.

Johnstown's lead grew to 5-0 thanks to a third inning Justin Whysong RBI single and a fourth inning Kormanski sacrifice fly.

Manchester cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth off a Jaiden Bosquet single to make the game 5-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Manchester cut the deficit to 5-3 when Noah Durham notched a two RBI single to left field.

Johnstown immediately responded in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs in the top of the frame, all with two outs. A two RBI single by Connor James and an RBI single by Colin Dinyar drove in three of the runs, while the other two scored via walks.

Johnstown starter Aaron Smearman threw 3.2 innings, allowing one run, no hits, two walks and six strikeouts in the win. In relief, Aaron Bowers and Whysong combined to throw 3.1 innings, allowing two runs, four hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Manchester's starter Logan Whitney suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned), four hits, four walks and struck out one. Four relievers combined to throw the final four innings and allowed five runs, five hits, four walks and struck out three.


GAME 3: Bayamon, PR 3, Bay County, MI 2

Bayamon, Puerto Rico opened its 2021 DICK’s Sporting Goods PONY League World Series with an exciting 3-2 win over Bay County, Michigan in Game Three. 

Bay County’s Talan Debo got the scoring started early, when he blasted the first home run of the 2021 DSGPLWS, a solo shot, in the top of the first.

Puerto Rico answered in their first plate appearance, with two runs, to take the 2-1 lead after one inning of play.

Joniel Cuadrado drove in Eliel Ramos on a single off the pitcher’s glove for the first run and Argenis Garay plated Sebastian Ramos the next at bat with a sacrifice flyout.

Bay County tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning. Debo drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a balk by Puerto Rico’s Axiel K. Gonzalez, then Jaxon Jenkins ripped a line drive to left field that brought in Debo.

Puerto Rico took the lead back in the bottom half of the fifth, on a two out line drive single by Juliomar Campos which scored Eliel Ramos, who singled to lead off the inning.

Kingston Dufort, of Bay County, hit a fly ball down the right field line that dropped in for a single, in the top of the sixth, that looked like it would score the tying run, but Jeanmichael Gonzalez, Puerto Rico’s second baseman, had other plans. Gonzalez took the throw in from right field and fired a strike to the catcher who tagged out the potential tying run. Bay County still had runners on second and third with two outs, after the play. Joseph Carmona finished off the inning with a three pitch strikeout, keeping the one run Puerto Rico lead intact after six innings.

Debo and Jenkins split the pitching duties in the top of the seventh for Bay County, and they held Puerto Rico scoreless.

Carmona struck out the first two batters of the bottom of the seventh, before reaching a pitch limit. Eliel Ramos entered and induced a fly out to end the game and earn the save.

Axiel K. Gonzalez started the game for Puerto Rico and went 4.2 innings. He allowed two runs on two hits, and struck out four while walking three. Carmona earned the win after throwing two innings of no run baseball.

Trey Flood, Bay County’s starter, settled in to retire Puerto Rico in order in both the second and third innings to finish his outing. Flood surrendered two runs and five hits, while striking out four and walking one in his three innings of work. Debo was first in relief and got tabbed with the loss, he went 2.2 innings and allowed one run.

 

GAME 4: Youngstown, OH 10, Washington County, PA 2

A nine run fourth inning sent Youngstown, OH past Washington County, PA in Saturday’s nightcap at the 2021 DICK’s Sporting Goods PONY League World Series, 10-2. 

Washington County got out in front early with two unearned runs in the top of the first. Jonah Williamson reached on an infield single and came around to score on a dropped fly ball by Youngstown’s right fielder with two outs. Lucas Burt scored on a pitcher’s balk during the next at bat.

 Both teams worked out of jams unscathed in the third. In the top half, Seth Walker worked out of a no out, bases loaded jam in the top of the third. He knocked down a line drive back at him and got the force out at home, then followed with a strikeout and pop out to shortstop. Washington County’s Cameron Dames snagged a line drive with runners on first and second to get them out of the bottom half.

Youngstown broke it open in the fourth inning. They sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine times on six hits, three free passes, and one Washington County error. Hunter Garvin started the inning with a double and came around to score the first run on a fielder’s choice.

Maddox Yost walked with the bases loaded to plate the second run. Later in the frame, Anthony Triveri drove in two runs on a single through the left side, Jackson Cheeks added an RBI single, and Garvin hit a sac fly. The inning was capped off by Carter Wilson and Dom Cubellis, who smashed back-to-back run scoring doubles to right-center field.

Youngstown added one more in the sixth on an error by Washington’s left fielder.

Seth Walker started for Youngstown and went 3.1 innings, pitching a no-decision. Two unearned runs came across in the first, but he kept Washington County off the scoreboard for the rest of his time on the mound. Carter Owens was second on the mound and earned the win. Owens threw 2.2 innings, he did not allow a hit and struck out five. Jake Rynd threw the last inning and sat Washington down in order.

Washington County had five players toe the rubber. Kole Olszewski started and went three innings, allowing two runs. Brogan Meighen was stabbed with the loss. Khi Bouman, Cameron Dames, and Derek Falvo all saw time on the mound for the host team.
